How the real test works
You take the learner's permit written test (仮免 学科試験) after the first stage of driving school, at the school or at a license center (運転免許センター). It has 50 statements; you mark each one true (○) or false (×).
The National Police Agency has told every prefecture to offer the test in 20 languages, including English, Nepali, Vietnamese, Tagalog, Sinhala, Urdu and Hindi. Days and centers vary, so check with yours before you book.
The format and pass mark come from the National Police Agency's notice on written tests (丁運発第46号) and Article 25 of the Road Traffic Act enforcement rules.

- License conversion test (外免切替): 50 questions, 30 minutes, pass with 45 (since October 2025).
This is independent practice, not the official test. Questions on the real test are different. Check the format and the languages offered with your license center (運転免許センター) or driving school.
