eSIM in Japan as a resident: what ahamo, povo, Rakuten Mobile and Sakura Mobile ask for with a residence card, and which cards are blocked as of October 2026.
As of October 2026, a foreign resident can get an eSIM in Japan when the carrier accepts a residence card in its online ID check. ahamo accepts the card but not cards issued from June 14, 2026. povo needs at least 90 days of stay left. Rakuten Mobile's phone check reads the card's IC chip. Sakura Mobile sells eSIM plans in English, 30GB for ¥4,378 a month, and takes foreign cards. Online contracts now require IC chip reading in principle.
You can get an eSIM in Japan as a resident if the carrier accepts your residence card (在留カード) in its online ID check. As of October 2026, ahamo accepts it but not cards issued from June 14, 2026. povo needs at least 90 days of stay left. Sakura Mobile sells eSIM plans in English and accepts foreign cards. An eSIM is a SIM built into the phone, so you get no plastic card in the mail.
Everything happens online, so the carrier must check your ID on screen. According to 総務省, IC chip reading has been required in principle for online contracts since April 1, 2026 (令和8年4月1日). povo, for example, asks you to read the chip in your card and take a face photo.
From April 2027, 総務省 says IC chip reading becomes required in principle for in-person contracts too, and data SIMs will also be subject to ID checks. Plan for the rules to get stricter, not looser.
This table covers what each carrier’s own pages say. Where a page says nothing about eSIM, we say so.
| Carrier | Residence card online? | Main conditions | Payment |
|---|---|---|---|
| ahamo | Yes | Current address on the front of the card; card not expired; not a card issued from June 14, 2026 | Credit or cash card in your name |
| povo | Yes | 90 or more days of stay left; address not 未定; no update history on the back | Not checked here |
| Rakuten Mobile | Phone check reads the IC chip; shop check also possible | IC chip must hold your correct address | Not checked here |
| Sakura Mobile | Yes, for emailed eSIM | Card registered with your current address | Foreign card or cash at a convenience store |
| docomo | Residence card plus passport | Passport not needed for permanent residents | Credit card if under 3 months of stay left |
The povo and Rakuten Mobile pages do not mention eSIM. Check the eSIM steps at sign-up. We could not read LINEMO’s pages, so we make no claim about them.
Two carriers published limits on newer cards, as of June to October 2026.
Check the issue date and the back of your card before you start.
Sakura Mobile is the clearest option in English. As of October 2026 it lists Voice+Data SIM/eSIM plans at 5GB ¥3,278, 15GB ¥3,828, 30GB ¥4,378 and 40GB ¥5,478 a month, with calls and SMS charged on top. A data-only eSIM costs ¥3,828 for 30GB. The activation fee is ¥5,500 on every plan, with no separate eSIM fee listed. Support is in English seven days a week, and the minimum term is one month.
For an emailed eSIM, Sakura Mobile asks for a residence card with your current address, a Japanese driver’s license showing your current address, or a My Number Card. Its FAQ says a passport or residence card is enough, which conflicts with this, so bring the card.
Mobal says it also sells eSIMs on the docomo network. We could not read its eSIM page, so check the price and ID rules there. Mobal’s voice-only SIM needs a full valid passport, not a copy, and customers must be 18 or over.
ahamo costs less: the 30GB plan is ¥2,970 a month as of October 2026. From December 1, 2026 its base fee becomes tiered, starting at ¥3,135 for 40GB. The ahamo pages we read do not mention English support, and you need a credit or cash card in your name.
It depends on the carrier. povo needs 90 or more days left. docomo says that if less than three months remain, you pay by credit card in your own name, and installment plans may not be available if the card expires before the contract ends. ahamo’s page only says the card must be unexpired.
Your period of stay (在留期間) matters for the contract, not only the ID check. Questions about renewal belong with the immigration bureau or a licensed immigration and administrative specialist (行政書士).
Go to a shop. Rakuten Mobile accepts the original residence card in store (copies are not accepted) and uploads both sides, or the front only for a 特定在留カード. ahamo points newer card holders to retailers that handle its sign-ups. If your card address is 未定, povo suggests a My Number Card instead.
If a carrier turns you down and you think it is wrong, a municipal consumer center (消費生活センター) can advise you.

Yes. Sakura Mobile sells eSIM plans, and ahamo works with eSIM-compatible phones. Your residence card must pass the carrier's ID check, and some carriers also want a credit card or bank account.
On ahamo, povo and Rakuten Mobile, yes, with conditions. ahamo needs the current address on the front of the card. povo needs 90 or more days of stay left. Rakuten Mobile's phone check reads the IC chip.
ahamo says it does not accept second-generation residence cards issued from June 14, 2026, or cards with the My Number Card function. Rakuten Mobile's phone check fails if the IC chip has no correct address. Both suggest applying at a shop.
ahamo needs a credit or cash card in your own name. Sakura Mobile accepts cards issued outside Japan, or cash at Lawson, FamilyMart and MiniStop.
It depends on the carrier and where you apply. Mobal says its voice-only SIM needs a full valid passport. Sakura Mobile lists a residence card, a Japanese driver's license or a My Number Card for emailed eSIMs, and uses a passport for applicants outside Japan or without a registered address.
