## Summary

As of October 2026, the Immigration Services Agency charges for residence procedures by what you are granted. At the counter, an extension or change of status costs ¥10,000 to ¥75,000 depending on the period of stay (¥33,000 for 1 year). Permanent residency costs ¥200,000. A re-entry permit costs ¥4,000 single or ¥7,000 multiple. Online fees are lower, plus a small payment fee. A certificate of eligibility and permission to work outside your status are free. Applications received by September 30, 2026 pay the old fees.

## Key facts

- Extension, 1 year (counter): ¥33,000
- Extension, 5 years (counter): ¥75,000
- Permanent residency: ¥200,000
- Re-entry permit: ¥4,000 / ¥7,000

Visa fees in Japan rose for applications received from October 1, 2026, and most now depend on the period of stay you are granted. At the counter, an extension or change of status costs **¥10,000 to ¥75,000** (¥33,000 for 1 year), permanent residency costs **¥200,000**, and a regular re-entry permit costs **¥4,000 or ¥7,000**. A certificate of eligibility is free. This is the position as of October 2026, from the Immigration Services Agency (出入国在留管理庁, ISA).

**Informational only:** This page lists ISA's published fees. It is not advice on your case. For questions about your own application, ask your regional immigration office or the ISA information center (0570-013904), and consider a certified administrative scrivener (行政書士).

## What changed on October 1, 2026?

Fees for extensions, changes of status and permanent residency used to be flat. Since October 1, 2026 they follow the **period of stay you are granted**, not the one you ask for. The date that counts is the day ISA **receives** your application: applications received by September 30, 2026 pay the old fee even if they are approved later.

| Procedure | Old fee (received by Sept 30, 2026) | New fee (received from Oct 1, 2026) |
|---|---|---|
| Extension of period of stay | ¥6,000 (¥5,500 online) | ¥10,000 to ¥75,000 by period |
| Permanent residency | ¥10,000 | ¥200,000 |

## Extension and change of status: fee by period granted

The same fee table applies to an extension of period of stay (在留期間更新) and to a change of status of residence (在留資格変更). At the counter you pay with **revenue stamps (収入印紙)**. Online you pay by convenience store or bank payment, plus a small payment fee.

| Period granted | Counter (revenue stamps) | Online (plus payment fee) |
|---|---|---|
| 3 months or less | ¥10,000 | ¥10,000 + ¥330 |
| Over 3 to 6 months | ¥18,000 | ¥15,000 + ¥330 |
| Over 6 months, under 1 year | ¥25,000 | ¥21,000 + ¥330 |
| 1 year | ¥33,000 | ¥27,000 + ¥330 |
| Over 1 year, under 3 years | ¥48,000 | ¥42,000 + ¥330 |
| 3 years to under 5 years | ¥64,000 | ¥56,000 + ¥550 |
| 5 years or more | ¥75,000 | ¥65,000 + ¥550 |

For the steps, see our guides to [visa renewal](/visa/visas/visa-renewal-japan/) and [change of status of residence](/visa/visas/change-of-status-of-residence-japan/).

## Permanent residency fee

**Permanent residency (永住):** ¥200,000 (For applications received from October 1, 2026, paid in revenue stamps if permission is granted. Applications received by September 30, 2026 pay ¥10,000. Standard processing is 4 to 6 months.)

ISA says an additional fee may apply if you receive a combined My Number residence card (特定在留カード) at the same time, and the PR page does not give the amount. ISA's online fee page also lists permanent residence, but its table is by period, so confirm the online PR fee with ISA before applying online. The requirements, including the rules for spouses and highly skilled professionals, are in our [permanent residency guide](/visa/residency/permanent-residency-japan-requirements/).

## Re-entry permit fees

Most residents leaving for under 1 year use the **special re-entry permit (みなし再入国許可)**, which needs no application. ISA's page sets no fee for it. A regular re-entry permit (再入国許可) is for longer trips.

| Re-entry permit | Counter | Online (plus ¥220 payment fee) |
|---|---|---|
| Single | ¥4,000 | ¥3,500 |
| Multiple | ¥7,000 | ¥6,500 |

The rules on the 1-year limit and deadlines are in our [re-entry permit guide](/visa/visas/re-entry-permit-japan/).

## What is free?

- **Certificate of eligibility (在留資格認定証明書):** ISA states "手数料はかかりません" (no fee). Your employer, school or another representative in Japan files it for you. See our [certificate of eligibility guide](/visa/visas/certificate-of-eligibility-japan/).
- **Permission to engage in activity other than that permitted (資格外活動許可):** no fee, per ISA. This is the permission students use to work part-time: see [working on a student visa](/visa/visas/student-visa-work-permit-japan/).
- **Special re-entry permit:** it needs no application, so there is no application fee.

## Reduced fees and online payment

A reduced fee exists for people in serious financial hardship who need humanitarian consideration. From October 1, 2026 it is **¥10,000** for an extension, **¥10,000** for a change of status and **¥20,000** for permanent residency. For PR it applies only to spouses or children of Japanese nationals, permanent residents or special permanent residents. You need proof, and you must apply **at the counter**: the online system does not support reductions.

**Online payment rules:** Online applications received from October 1, 2026 cannot be paid with revenue stamps. ISA accepts convenience store or bank payment, not credit cards, after it emails you the amount. ISA sends the payment notice from an @service-dgft.com address and does not send paper notices.

## Fees by situation

- **Work visa holder renewing:** the fee depends on whether you are granted 1, 3 or 5 years, which ISA decides. You cannot choose it.
- **Student switching to a work visa:** a change of status fee, by the period granted.
- **Moving to Japan:** the certificate of eligibility is free. ISA's pages used here do not cover the fee charged by a Japanese embassy or consulate for the visa abroad.

Rules and amounts can change, so check ISA's fee pages before you buy revenue stamps.
