# Send money from Japan to Nepal: providers, fees and eSewa compared

## Summary

As of October 2026, Remitly gave the most rupees on our ¥100,000 sample to a Nepali bank account: NPR 95,478 after a ¥180 fee, for a returning customer paying by bank transfer. SBI Remit gave NPR 95,189 at its app rate, Western Union NPR 94,666 and Wise NPR 94,130. Brastel (¥880), Seven Bank (¥890) and KYODAI (¥1,000, free on a new customer's first transfer) publish fees, but we couldn't record their rates. Remitly pays to eSewa.

To send money from Japan to Nepal, use a **registered money transfer company (資金移動業者)** from its app or website. On our sample of **¥100,000 sent on October 20, 2026**, **Remitly** gave **NPR 95,478** to a Nepali bank account after a ¥180 fee, and **SBI Remit** gave **NPR 95,189**. Western Union and Wise gave less. Japan Post Bank charges ¥3,000 before its rate. You need your residence card (在留カード) and My Number (個人番号), as of October 2026.

We priced ¥100,000 paid in total by bank transfer, using quotes captured between 02:31 and 02:38 JST on October 20, 2026. Where a provider adds the fee on top, we took it out of the ¥100,000 first. Wise's mid-market rate at that moment was 1 JPY = 0.958203 NPR. Rates change every day.

Total cost compares what arrives with ¥100,000 at the mid-market rate. Remitly's figure is the regular price for a returning customer; new customers get a promotional rate and no fee on their first ¥100,000.

SBI Remit's published Nepal rate applies to transfers in its app (NABIL), and it was slightly above the mid-market rate we recorded at the same minute. For other rates, SBI Remit refers you to its Nepal customer center. Western Union's mobile money rate gave NPR 94,623 and its cash pickup NPR 94,151.

Instarem also sends from Japan to Nepal, from its app, for ¥5,000 to ¥1,000,000 per transfer, but its public calculator didn't give a clear price for ¥100,000. City Express Money Transfer Japan and Speed Money Transfer Japan are registered with the FSA too. We couldn't find official fee tables for them.

- **Remitly:** most rupees on our sample, with bank, cash pickup and eSewa; no published delivery times.
- **SBI Remit:** close second at its app rate, and cash pickup through NABIL in about 10 minutes; no wallet.
- **Western Union:** bank, mobile money and cash pickup, for ¥1,000.
- **Wise:** mid-market rate, but a ¥1,764 fee, bank accounts only and an estimated 5 hours to arrive.

All four are registered with the FSA: Remitly Japan (Kanto 00077), SBI Remit (Kanto 00008), Western Union Japan (Kanto 00039) and Wise Payments Japan (Kanto 00040).

**Best for:**

- **Most rupees to a bank account:** Remitly, with SBI Remit close behind.
- **eSewa:** Remitly.
- **Fast cash pickup:** SBI Remit through NABIL or MoneyGram, about 10 minutes.
- **Your first transfer:** KYODAI charges no fee on a new customer's first transaction.

## How does the money arrive in Nepal?

- **Bank account:** SBI Remit pays to all banks in Nepal. Remitly names Global IME Bank, NIC Asia Bank and Bank of Kathmandu among others. Brastel says 1 to 3 business days.
- **eSewa and other wallets:** Remitly lists eSewa. Western Union offers mobile money and KYODAI lists e-wallets.
- **Cash pickup:** SBI Remit through NABIL (about 10 minutes), MoneyGram (about 10 minutes) and City Express (about 60 minutes). Brastel says 15 minutes to 3 hours.

**Help in Nepali:** KYODAI Remittance's website is available in Nepali. SBI Remit runs a Nepal customer center through Facebook.

## How do I send money to Nepal step by step?

## Can I pay in cash without a bank transfer?

Yes, with some providers. This helps if you're new in Japan and your [bank account](/money/banking/bank-account-for-foreigners-japan/) isn't ready yet.

- **SBI Remit at FamilyMart:** pay cash at the Multi Copier with a 17-digit order number, up to ¥100,000 per deposit, 07:00 to 21:00. The deposit fee is ¥800 for ¥50,000 to ¥100,000, on top of the remittance fee.
- **SBI Remit's Remit Card:** deposit at Japan Post ATMs for ¥330 up to ¥50,000 and ¥500 above, or at Lawson Bank ATMs for ¥300.
- **Brastel's free card:** deposit at Japan Post Bank ATMs for ¥440 (¥1,000 to ¥110,000).
- **Seven Bank ATMs:** since May 2026, KYODAI customers can deposit cash at Seven Bank ATMs with a card or the スマホATM smartphone service.
- **Western Union:** accepts cash at convenience stores (コンビニ払い).

Remitly doesn't accept cash at ATMs or credit cards from Japan. Wise is cheapest when you pay by bank transfer; a debit card raised its fee on our sample to about ¥3,700 to ¥4,900.

## What do I need to sign up in Japan?

- **Residence card (在留カード).** Wise, SBI Remit, Western Union, Remitly and Brastel accept it as ID for foreign residents.
- **My Number.** The overseas transfer reporting law requires it for every transfer abroad, including through money transfer companies.
- **A way to pay in yen.** Most providers want a bank transfer from your Japanese account; the cash options are above.

Each transfer through a Type 2 provider is capped at ¥1,000,000 by law, and transfers over ¥1,000,000 are reported to the tax office. Japan Post Bank's own limit is under ¥1,000,000 per transfer.
