## Summary

You can get a car loan in Japan without permanent residency, but fewer lenders accept you. As of October 2026, MUFG Bank, SBJ Bank and one credit union we checked accept foreigners only with permanent residency. Suruga Bank's foreigner auto loan does not require it. It lends ¥100,000 to ¥3 million at a fixed 6%, 9% or 12% a year, and asks for at least 3 months left on your period of stay, stable income and enough Japanese to follow the contract.

## Key facts

- MUFG, SBJ, one credit union: Permanent residency only
- Suruga Bank rate: 6%, 9% or 12% fixed
- Suruga amount and term: ¥100,000 to ¥3 million, up to 10 years
- Period of stay left: 3 months at Suruga (6 for some statuses)

A **car loan in Japan for a foreigner** is possible without permanent residency, but you have fewer lenders to choose from. As of October 2026, MUFG Bank and SBJ Bank accept foreign applicants **only with permanent residency (永住者)**, and so does the credit union loan we checked. **Suruga Bank's foreigner auto loan does not require it.** It asks instead for work-permitting status, stable income and at least **3 months** left on your period of stay (在留期間).

This page covers the money side. For the registration paperwork, see [buying a car in Japan as a foreigner](/driving/cars/buying-a-car-in-japan-foreigner/). We only checked a handful of lenders, so treat the lists below as examples, not a full market.

**Suruga Bank foreigner auto loan:** 6%, 9% or 12% fixed (¥100,000 to ¥3 million, up to 10 years, no guarantor. Rate set by screening. Product page dated 1 July 2025.)

## Which lenders accept foreigners without permanent residency?

Here is what each lender's own page says about foreign applicants, as of October 2026:

| Lender | Foreign applicants | Amount and term | Guarantee |
|---|---|---|---|
| **MUFG Bank** (三菱UFJ銀行, ネットDEマイカーローン) | Permanent residency required; must live in Japan and understand Japanese | Deferred type: fixed at 10 years | Guarantee company JACCS, no separate fee |
| **SBJ Bank** (SBJ銀行) | 永住者 or 特別永住者 only; must live in one of 13 listed prefectures and sign at a branch | ¥100,000 to ¥3 million, 6 months to 10 years | Guarantee company, fee inside the rate; 1.65% processing fee |
| **A credit union (信用金庫)** | Japanese nationals, 永住者 or 特別永住者, living or working in its area | Not checked | Shinkin guarantee fund |
| **Suruga Bank** (スルガ銀行, 外国人専用オートローン) | No permanent residency needed; status must permit work | ¥100,000 to ¥3 million, up to 10 years | No guarantor; guarantee company, no charge to you |

**What this means for you:**

- **No permanent residency:** MUFG, SBJ and the credit union rule you out in writing. Suruga Bank is the one lender we found that says plainly it doesn't need permanent residency.
- **Check the rate you actually pay.** Suruga sets a fixed 6.0%, 9.0% or 12.0% a year by screening, and its late charge is 19.5% a year.
- **Watch the location.** SBJ lends only to residents of 13 listed prefectures, and the credit union only in its own area. Suruga accepts applications online.
- **Pension-only income** is not accepted at MUFG.

If you already have permanent residency, more doors open. Our guide to [permanent residency requirements](/visa/residency/permanent-residency-japan-requirements/) explains how it works.

## How does the Suruga Bank foreigner auto loan work?

Suruga's loan is a card-type loan (カード型ローン) for car-related costs. The bank's product page lists these rules as of 1 July 2025:

- **Age:** 20 to under 65 at signing, and fully repaid by age 70.
- **Income:** stable income, and you expect to keep dealing with the bank. Part-time workers and people under one year in their job may still apply. You must send income documents, and the bank may ask again after you sign.
- **Status:** you live in Japan with a status of residence (在留資格) that permits work. The page links to a list of eligible statuses that we didn't read, so confirm yours. An older product summary from January 2024 words this as a status "without work restrictions", so ask which one the bank applies to you.
- **Period of stay:** at least **3 months** left at application, and at least 6 months for some statuses.
- **Amount:** ¥100,000 to ¥3 million, in ¥10,000 steps, and no more than your purchase quote.
- **Term:** up to 10 years, but some statuses have a shorter limit.
- **Uses:** buying a car or motorcycle, refinancing another lender's car loan, license fees, repairs, inspection (車検) and accessories. Business vehicles and private sales between individuals are excluded.

One rule matters if you may leave Japan: if you go home before your period of stay ends, you must repay in full **at least 10 days before** you leave.

Language is the catch. The bank's own summary says it may refuse the loan if you can't follow its explanation of the product and contract in Japanese. The product page is in Japanese and doesn't list support languages. The phone line is 0120-562-911, weekdays 9:00 to 18:00. Ask a Japanese-speaking friend or colleague to join the call.

## How much time must be left on my residence card?

There is no single rule. Each lender decides:

- **Suruga Bank:** at least 3 months left at application, 6 for some statuses, and some statuses get a shorter maximum term.
- **A driving-camp loan** offered by the agency i-drive: only foreigners with a **full-time job** can apply, and the loan period must be **within your period of stay** on your residence card. This is a loan for camp fees, not a car, but it shows how lenders think.
- **Everyone else:** a secondary guide (Japan Dev, December 2025) says many lenders ask for your remaining period of stay and don't publish a minimum. We couldn't confirm any number from a dealer-loan lender's own page.

For questions about your period of stay or renewal, ask the Immigration Services Agency or a licensed immigration and administrative specialist (行政書士).

## What about dealer loans?

Dealers can arrange a loan with a finance company (信販会社) on the spot. The Japan Dev guide says dealer loans are easier for foreigners to get than bank loans, and usually cost around 5% or more. It names JACCS and Toyota Finance as examples.

We couldn't verify this from the finance companies' own pages. JACCS's page blocked our access, and we found no foreigner rules for the others. Ask the dealer three things in writing:

1. Does the company accept my status of residence?
2. How many months must remain on my period of stay?
3. What is the total repayment, not just the monthly amount?

Check the term against your plans. Suruga requires full repayment before you leave Japan, and the driving-camp loan above must end within your period of stay.

## What do I bring to apply?

The banks we read ask for much the same documents. Prepare these before you start:

| Document | Notes |
|---|---|
| Residence card (在留カード) | Suruga asks for a copy; SBJ asks to see the original and copy it |
| Photo ID | Suruga: driver's license or My Number card. SBJ: driver's license, driving history certificate or photo resident card, plus a certificate of residence (住民票) |
| Income proof | SBJ: withholding slip (源泉徴収票), resident tax notice, income certificate or tax certificate, latest 1 year. New hires and people under 1 year in the job give 1 month of pay slips |
| Purchase quote or order form | Shows the amount and who you pay. Suruga caps the loan at the quote |
| A phone that takes voice calls | Suruga's online application requires it |

Lenders also screen you through a guarantee company. Our [credit score guide](/money/cards/credit-score-japan-foreigners/) explains how credit history works in Japan, and the [bank account guide](/money/banking/bank-account-for-foreigners-japan/) covers opening an account first.

**Compare the total cost, not the monthly payment:** A 10-year term lowers the monthly payment but raises total interest. Ask for the total repayment amount. For a loan that isn't for a car, our [personal loan guide](/money/banking/personal-loan-japan-foreigners/) explains the legal interest caps and how to spot illegal lenders.

## What other costs come with a car?

A loan covers the price, not the running costs. Budget for insurance as well: see [car insurance for foreigners in Japan](/driving/cars/car-insurance-japan-foreigners/). A secondary guide (Japan Dev) says you also need a parking space certificate. Our [car buying guide](/driving/cars/buying-a-car-in-japan-foreigner/) explains the parking certificate (車庫証明).

This page gives general information, not advice on your own case. Ask the lender directly before applying, because rules and rates change.

## Questions people ask

### Can a foreigner get a car loan in Japan without permanent residency?

Yes, but not from every lender. MUFG Bank, SBJ Bank and one credit union we checked accept foreigners only with permanent residency. Suruga Bank's foreigner auto loan does not require it.

### How much time must be left on my residence card for a car loan?

It depends on the lender. Suruga Bank asks for at least 3 months left at application, and 6 months for some statuses. A driving-camp loan we checked requires the loan term to end within your period of stay.

### What interest rate will I pay on a car loan as a foreigner?

Suruga Bank sets a fixed 6.0%, 9.0% or 12.0% a year after screening. We couldn't confirm dealer-loan rates from the finance companies themselves, so ask the dealer for the rate in writing.

### Can I get a car loan in Japan if I don't speak Japanese?

It is difficult. Suruga Bank's summary says it may refuse a loan if you can't understand its explanation of the product and contract in Japanese, and MUFG requires foreign applicants to understand Japanese. Bring a Japanese speaker or ask for support in your language.

### Do I need a guarantor for a car loan in Japan?

Not at the banks we checked. MUFG, Suruga and SBJ use a guarantee company instead of a personal guarantor, and the guarantee company screens you too.
